Post-graduate Course in “Educate about Cultural Heritage with History and Memory. Building Communities between School, Museums and Territory”

The UNESCO Chair in Human Development and Culture of Peace contributes to the educational activities of the Post-graduate Course “Educate about Cultural Heritage with History and Memory. Building Communities between School, Museums and Territory” at the University of Florence, particularly through the module “Strategies and techniques for heritage and sustainability”.

This contribution is fully aligned with the mission of the UNESCO Chair, which views cultural heritage, history, memory and sustainability as educational dimensions capable of fostering human development, participation, inclusion, social responsibility and a culture of peace.

The module encourages critical reflection on the ways in which heritage can serve as a catalyst for learning and the transformation of social contexts, highlighting the relationships between individuals, communities, cultural institutions and territories. Within this perspective, heritage education is understood not as the transmission of knowledge, but as an educational process aimed at the co-construction of shared meanings, the recognition of the tangible and intangible resources of places, and the promotion of sustainable educational practices.

Within this framework, the module also addresses methodological aspects related to the design and evaluation of educational and cultural interventions, including needs assessment, the definition of learning objectives, the selection of activities, and the development of tools to understand learning processes, outcomes and the potential transformations generated among participants and within the contexts in which they operate.

In line with the objectives of the UNESCO Chair, the Master’s Programme integrates research, educational practice and collaborative networking with schools, museums, universities, cultural institutions and local communities. It equips participants with the knowledge and competences required to design inclusive, participatory and sustainability-oriented educational pathways that contribute to human development and the promotion of a culture of peace.
